Reflection

In order to begin the final major project, we were made to brainstorm a few ideas for themes and issues we could build our project on. As we weren’t given a set theme to base our project on it was very interesting to come up with topics on our own and think about potential ideas for models we could come up with. To help us brainstorm further we had several activities for model makings, such as a paper mache tutorial where we were taught about one of the methods of model making which was using diluted glue and wires. The flexibility that we were given to choose our own theme for the project made me feel better and helped me focus on the aims and purposes I wanted to design for.

Further, into the project, we started thinking about various topics we could come up with which were in our interest and so I decided on researching the topic of retro-futurism which has been a topic of interest in the past couple of months, this topic relates to the idea of using futuristic technology and buildings combined with retro designs and patterns. This topic was inspired by the movie Tomorrowland and so, I started to build my research using movies and novels as retro-futurism is vastly based on the idea of fiction and is inspired by unconventional thinking. I further started researching using surveys in which I asked my audience about how the lockdown made them feel about living alone/ in groups and most of them replied by mentioning that the aftereffects of the lockdown have made them like alone time, however, would like to spend time with their loved ones. I also asked them questions about the shifts seen in the number of people living in a household over the years and the answers were all relating to the fact that the average number of people in a household had decreased over the decades due to various reasons. And so, I decided to make this the main focus of my project and work on making a space for people in the future which will help them enjoy their personal time whilst letting them spend quality time with their loved ones easily. Learning about others feelings during and after lockdown made me want to focus on building my model about the potential in the future however if I could change something about my method of communicating to people, I would prefer taking face to face interviews which was not possible due to the current covid situation

As I researched further about futuristic shifts that might be seen in technology was a major use of electric cars and general use of transport due to the depletion of fuel and so I thought of combing the two and making a space for people where they can enjoy the lavishness of a stationary house whilst enjoying the rapidity of a caravan or a mobile house, combining these two ideas brought me down to making a pod house with a detachable electronic car. The purpose behind this idea is to bring people a sense of mobile homes while still giving them the comfort of a stationary home, as based on my research people living in mobile homes do not tend to live a lavish life and buy a lot of things that can be stored in their house which brings it down to living on a bare minimum basis, however, with this design I wish to help them live in comfort and be able to own numerous items for comfort while still being able to move around rapidly and saving on fuel. This will help people enjoy their own space while being able to commute through places quickly.
